A Course in Production Series Overview



What is A Course in Production About?
A Course in Production is intended to be a free career resource for those who are currently in, or hope to some day be a part of a Production team in the 3D/CG animation industry.

 With a series of blog posts and videos, I will be producing nine lessons focusing on everything from my best practices within Production, what Production in the 3D animation industry is responsible for, and strategies for achieving excellence in a Production role.

 I think the content of this course is likely most appropriate for current or aspiring Production Coordinators and Production Managers, though it is possible that a lot of what is discussed could be transferable for any leadership/management role like Supervisors in our industry or those in Producer roles.

Organization
All posts and videos related to Course in Production will be posted on weekends to distinguish from the usual content of the yak occidental.

 All videos on my YouTube channel will have a link in the video description which lead to the video post and rough transcript here on the blog.

Accessibility
I won't be able to provide full subtitles or closed captioning for any of the videos, however, I will be providing a rough transcript for all videos here on the blog.

 'Rough transcript' is actually a bit misleading - while the tone of writing will be casual, the written post on the blog that corresponds with each video will actually be a lot more lengthy and detailed, including links to resources, etc. This is to say that if you were to read the posts only and ignore the videos entirely, you won't be missing out at all-- in fact, you will be even more informed!

 Lastly, my intention for all of the videos and associated posts is that they remain a free learning resource :)

Of all the men in the Gilmore Girls world, I think Zack was the worst. Here's nine reasons why. I'm currently re-watching Gilmore girls for the umpteenth time, and once more I find myself loathing Zack in particular. VIDEO: Tips for Better Dailies Notes

Here are 11 tips for taking better notes in dailies. If you’re in Production, good note-taking practices are essential and it never stops. As a coordinator, you might take notes for dailies. As a Production Manager or Producer you might have Production reports, all of these tasks rely on good note-taking.  A huge part of our role is data entry and management. Getting specific, let’s take a look at what you can do to take better notes in lighting/comp dailies. Even if your artists are in dailies, still make sure your notes are as specific as possible, don’t leave it to them to take their own notes, let them have that time to answer their supervisor’s questions or to focus on the feedback.  Let me be very clear: if you are in production and you are taking notes in dailies, it is your job to take accurate, efficient notes. 2 New-ish Perspectives on Work-Life Balance

Who needs work-life balance when you can 'Drop the Ball' or put your priorities 'in conversation' with one another? With the onset and endurance of the COVID19 pandemic, there have been many hot takes and disturbing changes in work-life balance. All over North America at least, we have seen women drop out of the workforce at such an alarming rate that many experts are calling this pandemic-induced trend a “shecession”. In animation, we have fortunately been able to work from home, though the balance between work and life has become a lot more blurred, if existing at all. Production staff and supervisors have observed a rise in ghost hours - people quietly logging on and working on their shots or assets at all times of the day, night, weekends because our work is well, there .
