11 Shows on CBC Gem to Stream Now

I'm a millennial & I watch CBC Gem. Here are my favourite shows you can stream free now!

I swear this is not a paid partnership, I'm honestly just  a bit nerdy this way.

I've been hearing complaints of late that everyone has watched everything on Netflix and Amazon Prime. Might I suggest the humble CBC GemCBC Gem is a free streaming platform for CBC programs. It's a lot of Can con and crossover from the BBC.

CBC Gem has mega hits like Schitt's Creek, Kim's Convenience, and of course, beloved Anne with an E, there are also lots of other great shows--here are eleven of my favourite shows.

SERIES

Cavendish

Just eight twenty-two minute episodes from a couple years ago about Andy and Mark, two brothers who go back to their home town of Cavendish, PEI to see their ailing father. I don't watch a lot of shows that star just men, but this one is hilarious, I've watched it over and over again. Bryn (played by Kelli Ogmundson), their younger sort-of step-sister is a freaking treasure on this series, honestly steals the show more than once.

Ordeal by Innocence

The description online is: "Christmas 1954. Wealthy philanthropist Rachel Argyll is murdered at her family estate Sunny Point. Her adopted son Jack Argyll is arrested for her murder. He vehemently protests his innocence."

It's a four-part BBC mini series based on an Agatha Christie novel. A strong cast with a strong story - lots going on here that will have you on the edge of your seat.

Frankie Drake Mysteries

You've heard of Murdoch, but do you know Frankie Drake? You got four smart broads solving crime and getting sh-t done OR as they say, "In 1920s Toronto, private eye Frankie Drake takes on the cases the cops don’t want or can’t handle. She’s a new detective for a new world, but is the world ready for her? A CBC Original, from the producers of Murdoch Mysteries." It's a bit cheesy at times, but I respect the effort very much.

The Family Law

Yayy, Asian people TV other than Crazy Rich Asians and Kim's Convenience! This is about a Chinese-Australian family of five kids, centered on Ben, the middle child, as their parents start to go through a divorce. There are three seasons for you to laugh away at their hijinks.

Raised by Wolves

Also originally on the BBC, Raised by Wolves is Caitlin Moran's show focusing on, "Six socially-isolated, homeschooled siblings and their acerbic, highly capable mother Della confront life and love in a completely inappropriate (and occasionally legally questionable) way."

Baroness von Sketch Show

I feel like this show doesn't get enough credit, there are tons of gems in this sketch comedy series starring four Canadian comediennes. Plus, there's four full seasons!

The Reluctant Landlord

Season Two from the BBC just went up recently, have not watched (yet!) but Season One was entertaining enough. The site's description for the show: "A man reluctantly serves as the proprietor of a pub, which he inherited from his late father."

A seven part series based on Thackeray's classic novel of the same name, I can't say that I loved the production design, costumes, or even that the acting was the strongest but at the same time I can't stop thinking about the story. We follow Becky Sharp as she attempts to ascend the ranks of English society during and after the Napoleonic wars. It's an interesting take on class privilege and relations, and a lot of what we're seeing our characters cast play out is eerily evocative our present-day obsession with followers, popularity, and social media.

MINI SERIES

Decoys

Their description is: "Go inside the world of competitive duck carving. Decoys, a CBC Gem original comedy series." It's a pretty charming and funny little mockumentary, def worth a look.

Ming's Dynasty

CBC Gem's description is: "Fledgling Toronto rappers Whyte Wyne and Young Riesling return to Riesling's home in small-town Alberta to run the family business: a Chinese restaurant. Will they chase the beats or be loyal to the eats?"

DOCUMENTARY

Good People with Mark Sakamoto

CBC gem says: "Good People takes a hard look at Canada’s problems and scours the planet for the places and solutions that offer hope. Exploring homelessness, gun violence outbreaks, veteran welfare, a world-worst record on garbage, and the opioid crisis, host Mark Sakamoto focuses the issues and connects with the people most affected." For me, it's nice to see creative and progressive problem solving all over Canada in cities that normally get little to no screen time.
