No, Idiocracy Does Not Make Me Want to have Kids

Image
Above : Idiocracy (2006), dir. Mike Judge So I’m about 15 years late to the party & I finally watched Idiocracy starring Luke Wilson and St. Maya Rudolph (hormone monstress extraordinaire). My ex-wife and I watched it cuz we have actually had MULTIPLE people reference Idiocracy when telling us why they are having kids or why we should have kids after learning we are child-free by choice. Here are my statements on this movie: 1. It has aged extremely poorly and uses racial slurs and “f-g” liberally in the dialogue 2. The movie is otherwise...fine for what it is 3. Idiocracy is a fictional movie and SATIRE about EUGENICS (eugenics people, eugenics) so NO, it does not convince me to have kids 4. Intelligence is not genetic*, which in and of itself undoes the premise of Idiocracy 5. Being smart doesn’t make you a better parent or more fit to be a parent 6. Being book smart is just one facet of intelligence. Emotional intelligence, street smarts, being a polyglot, etc, are equally ...

Best Of Esi Edugyan's "Washington Black"

Image
Here is a selection of memorable quotes from Washington Black by Esi Edugyan. I knew the nature of evil; I knew his benign, easy face. He would be a man, simply. And it was his very anonymity that would make it impossible to see him coming. p.176 It was not, I came to believe, that he did not love; only that he loved intermittently. p. 206 "You were children," his father said. "You knew nothing of beauty." "Children know everything about beauty," Titch countered softly. "It is adults who have forgotten." p.208 Luck is its own kind of manacle, perhaps. I do not know when it happened, only that it gradually crept over me until one day I woke to a burning certainty: I needed to better my circumstances, or I would die. p.231 She seemed relaxed, and with some of her severity now gone, there was only the fine intelligence of her eyes, and the obvious bodily pleasure she took in being out in fresh air. p.252-253 "In any case, it was then that I rec...

Best Of Chaim Potok's "My Name is Asher Lev"

Image
Here is a selection of memorable quotes from My Name is Asher Lev by Chaim Potok Textile art above: Untitled (c.1977) by Hannelore Baron But I will not apologize. It is absurd to apologize for a mystery. p.3 "A life should be lived for the sake of heaven. One man is not better than another because he is a doctor while the other is a shoemaker. One man is not better than another because he is a lawyer while the other is a painter. A life is measured by how it is lived for the sake of heaven." p.192 "Asher Lev, there are two ways of painting the world. In the whole history of art, there are only these two ways. One is the way of Greece and Africa, which sees the world as a geometric design. The other is the way of Persia and India and China, which sees the world as a flower. Ingres, C é zanne, Picasso paint the world as geometry. Van Gogh, Renoir, Kadinsky, Chagall paint the world as a flower." p.225 "An artist needs time to do nothing but sit around and thin...

Songs for TV Characters

Image
Here are some pairings of TV characters and songs that I think suit them uniquely. The character: Sasha from Bunheads (you can watch her epic monologue picture above here ) The song: Head Cheerleader by Pom Pom Squad The character: Alex* from The Expanse The song: Space Cowboy by Kacy Musgraves The character: Jughead from Riverdale The song: Superfreak by Rick James but specifically the version sung by Sandra to Jonah in Superstore, Season 6, Ep 12. *Disgraced actor Cas Anvar has been accused by several women of sexual assault and harassment.
